Riled up atheists show Francis is on to something

  • November 7, 2013

Three atheists got me thinking about Pope Francis the other day.

The first was Richard Dawkins, the famed atheist and biologist, who in a recent interview called Francis “a wolf in sheep’s clothing.” When the head of the Catholic Church can draw that comparison from the world’s most famous living atheist, he must be doing something right; perhaps even making atheists nervous about spreading the message of Jesus Christ a little too brilliantly.

The second came from a friend who is a Bay Street financier. He compared Pope Francis to the CEO of a multi-billion-dollar multinational corporation (a silly comparison, in my opinion) and that he believes Francis is “a joke” as a CEO. “Why do you say that?” I asked.

“Because when he says atheists like me can get to heaven, he is not serving his ‘paying customers’ well, those people who go to Church and take communion,” he says. “Why bother going to Church if at the end of the day it doesn’t matter when it comes to getting into heaven or not?”
