New look at New World pope

It’s been a long time since the Church has had to learn about a new pope. The shocking election of 1978 meant that Catholics the world over scrambled to discover who this Karol Wojytla from behind the Iron Curtain was. But the election of 2005 gave us a man already well-known to the world for more than a quarter century, Joseph Ratzinger. So with the election of Jorge Mario Bergoglio as Pope Francis, people are fascinated with a hitherto unknown man for the first time in more than three decades.

Our culture of celebrity can make someone famous overnight, but only superficially so. That’s why it’s welcome news that the Knights of Columbus have produced a documentary on the new pope’s life, Francis: The Pope from the New World. It will be shown on Canada’s Salt & Light TV on Nov. 24, at 9:30 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. ET, as well as on the Catholic network’s website.

The documentary is written, produced and directed by a Salt & Light alumnus, David Naglieri, along with his wife Michele Nuzzo- Naglieri. Naglieri is now manager of media for the Knights of Columbus supreme headquarters.
