Vengeance is not ours
Anne Fischer should not be appalled by my letter regarding the Last Judgment. Christ, whose words I was echoing, was not "salivating with pleasure at the thought of evil-doers being punished in eternal life" when he declared in the Beatitudes:"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied." I wrote about divine justice, not human vengeance. I quoted from Pope Benedict's encyclical Spe Salvi concerning the interaction of divine love, forgiveness and punishment, but Ms. Fischer made no mention of the encyclical. Sin does matter. God's justice will be done.
