ImageTORONTO — Before he called the Second Vatican Council and opened the windows of the church on the world, Pope John XXIII spent the Second World War in Istanbul rescuing Jews from the Holocaust. The director of the John XXIII Foundation for Religious Studies in Bologna, Italy, is coming to Toronto to talk about the link between these two events in the late pope’s life.

Alberto Melloni is a leading expert on the life of John XXIII and author of Rethinking Europe. His Oct. 17 lecture will address “The Holocaust Memoirs of Pope John XXIII.” The event gets underway at 4 p.m. in the University of St. Michael’s College’s Brennan Hall, room 200.

The conference is sponsored by the Canadian Centre for Ecumenism with support from the Canadian Jewish Congress and the Toronto School of Theology.
