 Queens Park, Ontario’s legislature At the official web site for Ontario’s parliament, www.ontla.on.ca, there’s a link to a form which allows any citizen to contribute up to 4,000 characters of comment on what sort of prayer, if any, should open each day’s sitting at Queen’s Park.
Premier Dalton McGuinty opened this can of worms in February with a remark that Ontario’s religious diversity goes beyond just Catholics and Protestants today. Ontario is one of the last legislatures in Canada to start the day with the Lord’s Prayer. It has been replaced by non-denominational prayers in Ottawa and most of the provinces and territories except Ontario, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Newfoundland’s House of Assembly is the only Canadian legislature to eschew prayer entirely.
Other members of the committee to review the prayer practice of our law makers are Liberal Bas Balkissoon, Conservative Garfield Dunlop and New Democrat Cheri Di Novo.
