 TORONTO - Archbishop Thomas Collins has made several new appointments in Toronto’s curial offices.
“Be assured of our ongoing commitment to be faithful and responsible stewards of all that has been entrusted to us by the people of the archdiocese,” Collins said in a letter to clergy, parish and diocesan staff.
Collins announced the appointment of Fr. Vincent Nguyen as Vice Chancellor of Spiritual Affairs and Associate Judicial Vicar, who will begin his ministry next fall. Nguyen previously served the archdiocese in parish ministry at St. Patrick’s, St. Monica’s, St. Cecelia’s and the Mission of the Vietnamese Martyrs.
William Target took over on May 5 as Director of the Office of Lay Ministry & Chaplaincy. He replaces Fr. Robert O’Brien who will return to parish ministry in June. Targett served as a Lay Ministry Formation Team Leader with the archdiocese since January 2006. He is a former school principal with the Toronto Catholic District School Board and is currently director of music ministry at St. Patrick’s parish in Markham.
The archbishop has asked Mary Kelly, who has an extensive history with the archdiocese, to assume the title of Manager of Stewardship.
“In order to more properly align our future efforts, the Stewardship function will move from the Development Office to the Office of Lay Ministry,” Collins said.
Also, the Office of Catholic Youth will welcome as new director Dr. Christian Elia. Elia spent several years with the Toronto Catholic District School Board and has volunteered in the past with the youth office, while also leading candidates in Confirmation preparation. Elia will replace Fr. Edwin Gonsalves, who will return to parish ministry after the World Youth Day 2008 celebrations.
The archdiocese’s curial offices staff more than 100 people and appointments are made based on the individual terms of each position.
