ImageTORONTO — If there’s more to do, then Susan Tomenson is one woman who can be counted on. On April 16 the Jesuits honoured the Catholic activist for her willingness to do much more than the minimum.

Jesuit provincial superior Fr. Jean-Marc Laporte bestowed the Magis Award on Tomenson for her contributions to a broad range of Jesuit ministries.

Magis is latin for “more,” and it’s a key concept in Jesuit life and the thinking of Jesuit founder St. Ignatius of Loyola. Tomenson embraces the magis by volunteering at the Loyola Arrupe Centre, a Jesuit-founded seniors’ residence in Toronto, and working with Kids4Peace, an organization which brings Muslim, Jewish and Christian children from Palestine and Israel to Toronto for 10 days together. Tomenson lives out an Ignatian spirituality through her involvement in a Christian Life Community, a Jesuit-led Catholic movement, and as a member of Toronto’s Jesuit-pastored Our Lady of Lourdes parish.

In accepting the award Tomenson said her family has been looking to Jesuits for spiritual guidance and opportunities to serve for four generations.

There are 172 Jesuits in English Canada and they’ve been part of Canadian history for 400 years.
