PICKERING, Ont. (Catholic Register Staff) — Jesuit Father Edmund Toreki passed away at Rene Goupil House in Pickering Aug. 23. He was in his 89th year, his 72nd of religious life.
Fr. Toreki was ordained to the priesthood in Hungary for the Hungarian province of the Jesuits. He came to Canada in 1952, beginning his pastoral ministry in Hamilton, Ont.
Over the years, Fr. Toreki — who joined the English Canadian Province of the Jesuits in 1962 — served mostly in Ontario, save for time teaching at St. Paul’s High School in Winnipeg.
Fr. Toreki’s funeral was held at the Manresa Retreat Centre Chapel Aug. 26. He is interred at the Jesuit Cemetery in Guelph, Ont.
