 MONTREAL - Canadian Catholics are being asked to help the tiny nation of Haiti that has borne the brunt of the storms during this hurricane season.
The latest storm to hit the impoverished Caribbean island was Hurricane Ike, which struck Haiti Sept. 7. The city of Gonaives was particularly hard hit by Ike, after already seeing severe flooding from previous hurricanes Hanna, Fay and Gustav.
The current death toll is estimated at 630, and another 650,000 people are awaiting aid in precarious conditions, according to the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace.
Development and Peace has committed $50,000 to Caritas Haiti, its partner in the nation, and is asking Catholics to donate to help alleviate the suffering that has wiped out much of the eastern end of the country.
“We are extremely concerned because Haiti is particularly vulnerable to this type of disaster,” said Anne Catherine Kennedy, Development and Peace’s program officer for Haiti.
“This year, the food riots in May and the political crisis from April to September have amplified the challenges already facing the population.”
