Development and Peace HaitiThe Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace was on target to surpass $1 million in aid donations one week after Haiti’s devastating earthquake.

“We’re doing about $100,000 a day, so we’re doing very well,” said Development and Peace spokesperson Jasmine Fortin. “We hope it stays up.”

The organization was promised $250,000 by the Quebec government and, at the end of the first week of collections, was expecting to surpass $700,000 through donations made  online and telephone.

The Archdiocese of Toronto had received $105,000 in online donations and another $15,000 to $20,000 sent directly to their office in six days of fundraising.

“These results don’t include any funds that have been raised at any of the 224 parishes,” said Bill Steinburg, communications spokesperson for ShareLife. Toronto Archbishop Thomas Collins has asked parishes take up collections for Haiti relief on Jan. 16-17 and Jan. 23-24.

Donations can be made through ShareLife’s secure web site (www.sharelife.org) and phone lines (1-800-263-2595 or 416-934-3411). The money will go to Caritas Internationalis through Development and Peace. All donations are matcheed by Ottawa.
