TORONTO - Mid-April saw the passing of two veteran priests with connections to the Toronto area. Jesuit Father Francis Murphy died on April 17 in Ajax-Pickering Hospital. He was in his 77th year and 60th year of religious life.

Fr. Murphy was ordained to the priesthood in 1961 by Cardinal James MacGuigan and was for many years a professor of theology in Halifax. From 1996 until moving to Rene Goupil House in Pickering in 2006, he served in various pastoral ministries in Halifax.

Two days later saw the passing of Fr. John Hawkshaw in Woodstock, Ont. A Toronto native, he was ordained for the Scarboro Foreign Missions in 1962.

Fr. Hawkshaw was incardinated into the archdiocese of Toronto in 1976 and served in a number of parishes before retiring in 2000 and moving to Woodstock.
