TORONTO - The Toronto archdiocesan council of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada passed a resolution calling for the restoration of prayer in all schools at its 86th annual convention held May 8 and 9.
Members also passed a resolution to improve education about the effects of impaired driving at the convention, held under the theme “Love One Another... As the Father Loves You.”
Restoring school prayer has been around as a resolution for a few years but the CWL has not passed it until now.
“If (students) felt they could talk to God, whichever God was in their lives, if they knew that someone was listening it might help them,” said Patricia Cross, president of the Toronto Archdiocesan Council.
The resolutions will be passed on to the Ontario Provincial Council and if approved will be presented at the Ontario Provincial annual convention in July. That will be held in Windsor.
Members put the resolutions in motion by having speakers present the issues in parishes.
Also at the convention, Cheryl Perera, founder and president of One Child, a group working to eliminate the global sex trade of children, addressed the convention as keynote speaker.
A number of youth awards were also presented to Grade 7 and 8 students at the closing banquet.
