El Salvador nonprofit keeps mission to serve the poor through war, disasters

Well-wishers gather July 9 at the dedication of a statue honoring Franciscan Father Flavian Mucci in Sonsonate, El Salvador. The statue marks the arrival of Father Mucci to El Salvador, where the founder of the Agape Association of El Salvador has served the poor for 50 years.

SONSONATE, El Salvador – In 1977, when Franciscan Father Flavian Mucci found himself away from home, he decided to host Christmas dinner for the homeless in a rural zone of El Salvador. It was a meal the young friar would never forget.

A Franciscan friar trades a field of dreams for an empire for the poor

Franciscan Father Flavian Mucci, far right, celebrates 50 years of arriving in El Salvador July 9 in Sonsonate, El Salvador. In his 50 years in the country, Boston native Father Mucci has built an empire of social and public services that benefit the country's poor called the Agape Association of El Salvador.

SONSONATE, El Salvador – His Boston Red Sox baseball hat is almost as big a part of him as his brown Franciscan habit. Anywhere Franciscan Father Flavian Mucci goes in El Salvador, he's known not only for his love of baseball, but more importantly, for the only thing he loves more than the game: the poor.
