Monsignor Ocariz confirmed as new prelate of Opus Dei

Spanish Msgr. Fernando Ocariz, pictured in Rome in 2016, was elected Jan. 23 as the new head of the prelature of Opus Dei. His appointment was confirmed the same day by Pope Francis.

ROME, Italy – Pope Francis on Monday confirmed the election of Monsignor Fernando Ocariz Braña as Prelate of Opus Dei. The priest becomes the third successor of St. Josemaria Escriva as head of the personal prelature.

Pope remembers Opus Dei head as 'paternal and generous' witness

Bishop Javier Echevarría Rodríguez, the Prelate of Opus Dei, died at the age of 84 on Dec. 12.

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis expressed condolences to the members of Opus Dei following the death of Bishop Javier Echevarria, who led the prelature for over 20 years.
