More than a saint, Our Lady of Guadalupe represents Mexican identity

MEXICO CITY - Jonathan Gonzalez lugged a large statue of St. Juan Diego into the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe on a recent Sunday, showing no signs of strain as he moved through the masses at the world's most-visited Marian shrine.

Our Lady of Guadalupe enthusiasm overpowers devotion to St. Juan Diego

Jose Alfredo Robles, a "conchero" dancer, attends the Dec. 9 feast day for St. Juan Diego at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. The indigenous saint has not attracted a large devotion since being canonized in 2002.

MEXICO CITY - For the Dec. 9 feast of St. Juan Diego, traditional indigenous dancers known as "concheros" and "chinelos" danced outside the Old Chapel of the Indians on the grounds of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Pope praises Our Lady of Guadalupe as great missionary of 'our America'

VATICAN CITY - Preceded by a procession of flags from the nations of the Americas and the recitation of the rosary in Spanish, Pope Francis and thousands of Catholics from across the Atlantic celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the Vatican.
