Ordination without papal mandate is serious violation, says Vatican on rumours of new bishops in China

Chinese Catholic priests baptize new believers during a 2013 Easter Vigil in a church in Shenyang, China. The Vatican put out a statement, amidst rumours of new bishops secretly ordinated in China, that ordination of bishops without the papal mandate is a serioius violation of church law.

VATICAN CITY – No matter what the motivation or how seriously threatened one may believe the Catholic Church in China is, the ordination of bishops without a mandate from the pope is a serious violation of church law, the Vatican said.
