TORONTO - William Downe, president and chief executive officer of BMO Financial Group, has been appointed as chair of the 28th annual Cardinal’s Dinner, the largest fund-raising dinner in Canada.
The next Cardinal’s Dinner will be held Oct. 25 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Begun by the late Cardinal Gerald Emmett Carter, each year the dinner draws more than 1,900 people from across the Greater Toronto Area and features representation from all levels of government, including area municipalities.

The money raised from the dinner helps finance the archbishop of Toronto’s favourite charities that are not fully funded by other agencies.

Downe has had a long career with the Bank of Montreal. He started at the bank in 1983 and has held senior positions in Denver, Houston, Chicago and Toronto.

He has also held various volunteer roles in the community. He is chair of the board of directors of St. Michael’s Hospital and is a past board member of Goodwill Industries of Chicago.

In 2003, Downe received the Rotman Distinguished Business Alumni Award from the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, and in 2005 an Arbor Award from the U. of T. for outstanding personal service to the university.
