Remembrance Day hits close to home

TORONTO - On Nov. 11 the entire student body, full roster of staff and a couple dozen community members came together at St. Anselm Catholic School to celebrate the sacrifice of soldiers, both living and deceased. That included one of their own.

We are all His own

A couple embraces at the foot of the National War Memorial in Ottawa, Ontario, Oct. 23. Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, a Canadian soldier, was shot and killed the previous day while on duty at the nearby National War Memorial.

Two days before its crews tidied up the National War Memorial in Ottawa on All Souls Day, Public Works Canada issued an advisory that flowers and other mementos would be removed.

A nation mourns a fallen son

His nation wept, his city bowed and knelt in prayer and his family bore a greater pain than human hearts were made to endure as Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was sent to his final rest from Christ Church Anglican Cathedral in Hamilton, Ont., Oct. 28.

We must remain compassionate, open in wake of soldiers’ deaths
