ImageTORONTO - The Toronto priestly fraternity lost two members in the last days of August. Fr. Paschal Breau, S.A., passed away on Aug. 29 in his 86th year. The next day, Sacred Heart Father James Cunliffe passed away in Memphis, Tenn. He was 77.

Fr. Breau was in his 62nd year of religious life. He was ordained for the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement in 1979. Before then, he had served as director of brothers vocations for the order from 1956-1971.

Fr. Breau’s priestly work took him to Lumberton, N.C., and on to St. Joseph the Worker parish in Richmond, B.C. He took up permanent residence in Paul Wattson Friary in Toronto in 1999.

Fr. Cunliffe, a native of Philadelphia, served in several dioceses in Canada, including Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. In Toronto, he ministered at St. Rose of Lima parish from 1979-86 before moving on to Caledonia, Ont., from 1986 to 1993. From there he returned to his native United States where he took up parish ministry.

Fr. Breau’s funeral took place on Sept. 3 at St. Joan of Arc Church. He was interred at the Friars’ Cemetery in Graymoor, N.Y.

Fr. Cunliffe’s funeral took place Sept. 5 in Hales Corners, Wis.
