 TORONTO — Of course Jesuits need money, and they will be happy to accept yours. But the second annual Jesuit Provincial’s Dinner will be about much more than money.
The now annual fund-raising dinner will honour both lay people and Jesuits who have followed the path blazed by Jesuit founder St. Ignatius of Loyola.
On the lay side, the Provincial’s Dinner will honour long-time Christian Life Community activist and friend to English Canada’s Jesuits Susan Tomenson. The Christian Life Community is a world-wide Catholic lay movement which in the 1940s picked up from where the old Jesuit inspired Sodalities of Our Lady left off — deepening the spirituality of St. Ignatius among people in all walks of life and fostering the art of discernment among the faithful.
The dinner will also honour Jesuits who have spent a half century in the Society of Jesus. This year’s Jesuit jubilarians will include Fr. Eric Jensen, Fr. Peter Monty and Fr. Eugene Hughes, three men who entered the novitiate together in 1958.
Dinner gets underway with a reception at 6:30 p.m. April 16 at the La Villa Ballroom, 114 Toryork Dr. in Toronto’s north end, with drinks and a reception, followed by a five-course meal. The Jesuits would not have dinner without first giving thanks. For that purpose there will be a Mass at nearby St. Wilfred’s Catholic Church, 1675 Finch Ave. W. at 5 p.m.
Tickets are $125 per person, and come with a $80 tax receipt. A table of eight can be purchased for $1,000, garnering a tax receipt of $640. Places should be reserved before Jan. 11.
