ImageRICHMOND HILL, Ont. - The York Catholic District School Board. has named a new school in Richmond Hill after internationally renowned Canadian Jean Vanier.

“Jean Vanier is truly an inspirational and motivated individual,” said Chris Cable, communications manager with the York Catholic District School Board.

Vanier is the founder of L’Arche, an international organization that creates communities for people with and without developmental disabilities to live and work together.

“He sets a positive example for everyone that he encounters,” said Cable. “Coincidentally, there happens to be a L’Arche home within the new school’s boundaries. He is the right person to choose for naming a school.”

The L’Arche Daybreak community is on Yonge Street in Richmond Hill.

To this day, Vanier continues to write, travel, conduct retreats and motivate youth at rallies.

A number of schools in Canada are named after Vanier, including a secondary school within the Toronto Catholic District School Board. Vanier’s father, former governor general of Canada Georges Vanier, also has more than a dozen Canadian schools named after him.

The new school is slated to open in September 2009.
