ImageTORONTO - Edward F. Belton, a prominent Catholic businessman who was devoted to his family and community, died March 12 of a heart attack at North York General Hospital. He was 77.

Mr. Belton was a household name in the insurance industry in Canada. He worked for many different companies and organizations, including stints as president and chief executive officer of the Insurers’ Advisory Organization (1974-1986) and the Canadian Insurance Exchange in 1987. He was also president and chief executive officer of Edward F. Belton Enterprises Inc., and Forecast Publishers, publisher of the well-known Belton Report.

He also served the Roman Catholic community in a variety of ways. At the time of his death, he was a Knight Commander of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, an ancient chivalric order which provides help to church efforts in the Holy Land. He had also served on the executive of the Parents’ Guild at St. Joseph’s Morrow Park and the Parents Foundation for Brebeuf College School, as chair of Catholic Family Services, and chair of the finance committee of the board of directors of Providence Healthcare. He was also an active supporter of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and other charities.

Mr. Belton’s first wife, Joan, died eight years ago. He subsequently married Kathleen Delahunty.

Mr. Belton is survived by his children Kelly Ann Belton (Paul Royes), Greg Belton (Susie), Lisa Eaton (John David), Patrick, brother Ron Belton and sister Eileen Reade, plus numerous grandchildren.

The funeral Mass for Mr. Belton was held March 17 at St. Michael’s Cathedral.
