ImageTORONTO - Toronto’s Catholics have helped send more than $1 million to aid victims of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar and earthquakes in China’s Sichuan province.

The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace was presented with a cheque for $502,985.12. With the exception of $5,820.07 which arrived after the deadline, that money will be matched by the Canadian International Development Agency, the federal government’s aid agency.

Including the government matching funds, the Toronto total for Asian disaster relief is $1,000,150.10.

Parishes, schools and individuals raised $186,943.05 to help more than one million people left homeless by the cyclone that hit Myanmar May 2.

Development and Peace will forward the money to Caritas Internationalis which is providing food, medical assistance, water purification equipment and temporary shelter to more than 60,000 people in Myanmar.

The $316,042.02 for China will also make its way to relief efforts through Development and Peace and Caritas Internationalis.

Nationally, Development and Peace raised $1.8 million for Myanmar (CIDA matched $1.66 million) and $400,000 for China (CIDA matched $380,000).
