District of Columbia announces hotline to report sex abuse by clergy

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia announced Oct. 22 the launch of a hotline and email address to report child sexual abuse by clergy.

"Survivors of child sexual abuse by clergy who wish to share their experiences and/or those who have knowledge of such abuse are encouraged to report these incidents to the U.S. Attorney's Office for potential criminal investigation and prosecution," said U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu in a news release.

The office provided the hotline, (202) 252-7008, for anyone wishing to report "child sexual abuse by a clergy member that took place in a house of worship, school, or other location in the District of Columbia," and also provided the email, USADC.ReportClergyAbuse@usdoj.gov, to report abuse.

The announcement was made days after the Archdiocese of Washington released names of more than two dozen clergy that it said had, over the past 70 years, been "credibly accused" of sexual abuse of minors. The oldest case was reported in 1953 and the last case in 2007, and includes priests as well as one deacon.
