Cash registered

Quinton Amundson’s recent cover story “Cash no longer king” made for essential reading. The driver seems a mix of technophilia, fear and alienation turbo-charged during the pandemic.

Cash is about exchange and value: the basic device by which we interact with strangers and build community. Coins, talents, the widow’s mite, the pearl of great price are tangible symbols that connote profound truth.

Modernism is a trend towards increasing abstraction at the expense of tradition and history. Technology is simply a manifestation of this.

The Bible would view this as the Gilded Calf. At the heart of Jesus’ message is humility “humus” — to be grounded.
