Protecting people means protecting the planet, Turkson says

Cardinal Peter Turkson said that Pope Francis is publishing the encyclical on the environment to remind people that their choices are moral in nature when it comes to creation.

ROME - Pride, greed and selfishness are destroying the planet just as they destroy human lives, said Cardinal Peter Turkson.

Time to tackle global warming running out, Pope tells climate summit

In a message to Pulgar-Vidal, Pope Francis said the time to solve the problem of climate change "is running out." He also insisted climate change is a serious moral problem.

VATICAN CITY - Tackling the problem of climate change is a serious ethical and moral responsibility, Pope Francis told negotiators from around the world meeting for a climate summit in Lima, Peru.

Vatican official calls for shared responsibility in protecting planet

In a statement during the UN Climate Summit, Cardinal Pietro Parolin observed that "warming of the climate system is unequivocal. It is a very serious problem which ... has grave consequences for the most vulnerable sectors of society and, clearly, for future generations."

UNITED NATIONS - A sense of "shared responsibility to protect our planet and the human family" must influence how nations react to the reality of climate change, the Vatican's secretary of state told the United Nations Sept. 23.
