Here are the Bible Book(s)/Chapter(s) to read each day this week. Note that the readings are based on the New American Bible.
Day 331 – Sunday, May 18
1 Timothy Chapters 1-5
Read 1 Timothy 1:12-17 again.
What do these verses say about the potential for people with a sinful past to do the work of Christ?
Read Psalm 103:11-12. What do these verses tell us about God’s mercy?
Ask God to help us to believe that God’s mercy endures forever.
Are any words, thoughts or actions from your past weighing down your spirit in the present? Have you considered turning to the Sacrament of Reconciliation and possibly a spiritual director for help?
Day 332 – Monday, May 19
1 Timothy Chapters 6 and 2 Timothy Chapter 1-4
Read 2 Timothy 4:9-18 again.
In these verses Paul revealed some of his experiences of feeling abandoned while serving the Lord. Although, at times, his friends deserted him, the Lord stood by him.
Ask God to help us to see when He is trying to get more of our undivided attention.
Do you remember any times in your life when it seemed that you felt abandoned by friends, family or co-workers but God came to comfort you? If so, did this experience strengthen you in some way?
Day 333 – Tuesday, May 20
Titus Chapters 1-3
In Paul’s letter to Titus, as in his letters to Timothy, Paul gave advice on Church leadership.
Read Titus 1:5-9 again. What are the characteristics of an ideal leader according to Paul?
Ask God to help us to appreciate the willingness of those in leadership positions to take on challenging responsibilities and to give us wisdom in making any choices we have in determining who our leaders are.
How important is the character of candidates when you choose for whom to vote in an election?
Day 334 – Wednesday, May 21
All of Philemon and Hebrews Chapters 1-2
Read Philemon verses 17-21 again.
Paul wrote a letter to Philemon in order to support Onesimus.
Ask God to help us to see opportunities to promote and support others.
Do you ever write email messages, social media posts or letters to have someone’s good deeds recognized? Do you have some influence that you can use to help someone get a second chance?
Day 335 – Thursday, May 22
Hebrews Chapters 3-5
Read Hebrews 3:7-10, 3:14-15 and 4:6-7 again.
These verses exhort us not to harden our hearts when we hear God’s voice.
Ask God to help us to hear others with love in our hearts.
What do you think it means to harden our hearts? What relationship is there between what goes on in our hearts and in what we are able to hear? How easy is it for us to listen to God, to a spouse or to another family member with an open heart when we are holding a grudge against someone?
Day 336 – Friday, May 23
Hebrews Chapters 6-7
Read Hebrews 7:1-10 again, and then read Genesis 14:17-20.
In the passage from Genesis what did Melchizedek give Abram? What did Abram give Melchizedek in return?
Read Malachi 3:10 and ask God to show us how our generosity towards others increases His generosity towards us.
In your life, what people and activities get the most of your time, money and attention? Have you ever noticed any special blessings come your way when you give to others?
Day 337 – Saturday, May 24
Hebrews Chapters 8-9
Read Hebrews 9:24 again. This verse tells us that Christ appeared in Heaven on our behalf.
Read John 3:16 and ask God to help us know how much He loves us.
Imagine Jesus in Heaven appearing before His Father on your behalf. How much light is around Him? What colours do you see? Imagine the voice of Jesus — how does it sound to you? What is He saying to the Father about what you are going through right now?
A version of this story appeared in the May 18, 2025, issue of The Catholic Register with the headline "The Lord will always stand by us".
