American election: Read all about it here

We know Canadians love hearing about the American election. Barack Obama and Sarah Palin are just way more interesting than our blancmange politicians up here. Now you can get a truly Catholic perspective on the U.S. campaign from Catholic News Service, one of the most authoritative sources you can find.

CNS, an arm of the U.S. bishops conference and a long-time international partner with The Catholic Register, has compiled a truly impressive web site for its election articles. Check it out here.

On it, you'll find out the latest on the rhetorical duels between some Catholic bishops and Catholic Democrat politicians such as Joe Biden, the party's vice-presidential candidate, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi over abortion.

There are thorough examinations of issues such as climate change, the economy, health care and education. You'll also find the acceptance speeches of both Republican candidate John McCain and his Democrat opponent Obama.

As you would expect, CNS scrutinizes the Democrat and Republican platforms on abortion and other life issues. But it also provides dozens of background stories on different ways in which Catholics are engaged in political life in the United States.

Finally, there is an extensive section on Faithful Citizenship, the U.S. bishops' project to promote intelligent, thoughtful participation in civic life among Catholics. It's worth a look.
