ShareLife well on its way to meet goal

{mosimage}TORONTO - After the second ShareLife Sunday May 2-3, the charitable fundraising arm of the Toronto archdiocese is halfway through its parish campaign and more than halfway to reaching its goal of $12 million.

So far, more than $7.1 million has been raised by Toronto parishes, said Arthur Peters, ShareLife’s executive director. He hopes to raise the remaining $5 million to effectively support those in need through its 33 charitable agencies.

A surprise this year, Peters said, is that while the financial crisis has hit people everywhere, parishes have continued to show strong support.

“The economy is hurting but priests have been telling me that people in the parishes are looking for ways to contribute because they want to help others,” he said.

To assist the parishes, ShareLife gave them individual goals to reach this year, which seems to have helped, Peters added.

As for ShareLife’s corporate campaign goal of $1.625 million, Peters said numbers were still trickling in. But he remains optimistic despite losing a few patrons this year, as new ones have come on board.

“Our corporate campaign, especially in these times, is a challenge. But I remain optimistic that we will do the best we can.”

One way is the annual corporate golf tournament that will be held June 10. ShareLife hopes to raise $100,000 there.

The final ShareLife Sunday collection weekend for the parish campaign will be June 6-7.
