General reporter

The Catholic Register, Canada's national Catholic weekly newspaper (, seeks a general news reporter to write news and feature articles for its newspaper and website. This is a full-time position with benefits.

The ideal candidate will have a journalism degree or relevant experience, two years practical experience, basic photography and video skills, plus up-to-date website and social media skills. Based in Toronto, this is a multi-faceted role that requires someone who can source news, conduct interviews, write and edit articles, take photographs and participate in social media on daily deadlines.

Digital Editor

The Catholic Register seeks a full-time digital editor to oversee its daily digital operations.

The ideal candidate will be a combination news-junkie and tech-savvy person with a journalism degree or relevant experience, plus up-to-date digital skills that include working knowledge of HTML, multi-media tools and social media platforms and interfaces.

Based in Toronto, this is a multi-faceted role that requires someone who can source news, edit articles, photos and videos, write headlines and cutlines and post stories on daily deadlines. The ability to create graphics for web and social media and being adept at using Adobe’s product suite is a definite advantage.

The digital editor is responsible for creating and maintaining webpages, responding to requests and basic IT support from other departments, and liaising with the Register’s vendors on matters related to IT and the website, such as server maintenance, application development, maintaining the CMS and site design.

The digital editor also coordinates with journalists on the creation of digital media, such as videos and photo galleries, for the digital edition of The Catholic Register. This is not a news writing position, although some news writing may be possible.

The position entails occasional off-hours work from home.


- Journalism degree or comparable experience in writing and editing

- Understanding of Search Engine Optimization techniques

- Experience with social media platforms and interfaces, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Hootsuite

- Familiar with email marketing platform MailChimp or similar programs.

- Knowledgeable in Adobe CC programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, InDesign, Premiere, Audition, Lightroom.

- Familiarity with Joomla or similar content management systems, Joomla K2 extension, HTML, Google analytics, FTP programs

- Knowledge and/or experience with XHTML CSS, Javascript, PHP, mySQL and OpenX ad server are advantages.

- Experience working in a Macintosh and OS X Server environment a definite advantage

- Knowledge of VPN, Apple Remote Control, TeamViewer an asset

- Working knowledge of the Catholic faith and its institutions a definite advantage
