And when that someone is your teenage son and that steadfast belief you’ve forever espoused is Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church, it’s hardly something you can pretend you didn’t hear. It’s hurtful, discouraging and depressing. It shakes your very being. It makes you question your role in life and your usefulness as a parent.
My son Angus is 19, a university freshman who talks about the Catholic Church’s “stubborn insistence on maintaining values that no longer have any relevance.” The Church and its values still resonate deeply with me.
