TORONTO - Catholic education has received an ally in newly appointed education minister Leona Dombrowsky, says the head of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association.
James Ryan told The Catholic Register that the OECTA association welcomes Dombrowsky’s appointment and is confident that there will be a productive working relationship with the new minister.
“In all of our meetings with (Dombrowsky) over the years, she has always been supportive of publicly funded Catholic education and public education,” he said. “Her background in education supports that.”

In a Jan. 19 cabinet shuffle, Premier Dalton McGuinty moved Kathleen Wynne from education to transport and moved Dombrowsky from agriculture to education.
“I have some history with the Catholic education community, and am aware of the history and significant contributions that the Catholic community has made to the Catholic education system,” said Dombrowsky.
Before entering provincial politics in 1999, Dombrowsky served as a school trustee for several years in two Catholic boards. She is also a past director of the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association.
