Fr. Hayes honoured with St. Jerome’s Sweeney award

WATERLOO, Ont. - To St. Jerome’s University President Fr. David Perrin, it was no surprise that an award dinner in honour of Fr. Bernie Hayes drew a sell-out crowd.
“Fr. Bernie has touched countless lives and hearts in this community,” said Perrin in presenting Hayes with the 2009 Chancellor John Sweeney Award for Leadership in Catholic University Education.

“His ability to connect with people — through teaching, through retreats, through his books — has made him an exemplary Catholic educator who brings to life the message of the Gospel,” Perrin said.
The award was presented Oct. 2 at the D.R. Letson Community Centre on the campus of St. Jerome’s University.
Hayes was recognized for contributions “over a long and fruitful career” that has seen him serve as a teacher and administrator at St. Jerome’s High School, at Scollard Hall in North Bay, at St. Mary’s High School in Kitchener, at St. Thomas Scholasticate in London, and at St. Mary’s College Seminary in Kentucky.
“While this honour is being given to me, it is also an honour given to all my fellow religious in the Congregation of the Resurrection,” Hayes said.
“For more than 150 years, their hard work and sacrifice in the cause of education has contributed in great measure to the lives of so many in this region and beyond and to the success of so many in various careers and professions.
“Personally, my debt to my fellow Resurrectionists is huge. I am blessed to have had their support and example over the years and the opportunities to translate that into my service to others,” said Hayes.
