No vote to replace fired trustee

TORONTO - With three-years-plus remaining on the current term, Toronto’s Catholic school board is appointing a replacement trustee rather holding an election to decide who will represent Catholic school supporters between Bloor Street and Highway 401 west of Bathurst and east of Jane.
Trustees were worried about the $180,000 cost of running a by-election and the possibility Christine Nunziata could run again, and would be favoured to win if she did.
The board fired Nunziata in February after she had missed four consecutive Toronto Catholic District School Board meetings. She has also been embroiled in a scandal over her use of a board-issued credit card for vacations, restaurant meals and alcohol, and online shopping.
“My first choice would always be for the ward to elect their own representative,” board chair Catherine LeBlanc-Miller told The Catholic Register. “Given that there is a lot of time remaining on the term, that would have been my preference.”
Trustees, however, voted down that option.
Instead the board will select candidates from Ward 6 and interview them for the job at a special meeting May 8. Catholic school supporters who live within the Ward 6 boundaries have until 4:30 p.m. on April 25 to apply for the job. Trustee candidate packages were scheduled to be available at the board offices April 7.
