Social justice commitment marked Kennedy’s stay at OECTA

TORONTO - Special education, religion and history teacher Donna Marie Kennedy is leaving her current job as president of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association with the conviction that social justice is the cornerstone of her union’s existence.
Though there’s always issues, Ontario Catholic teachers have it pretty good, said Kennedy.
“We have an obligation to get that same justice for others,” she said.
The Ottawa teacher was the first-ever chair of the Ontario College of Teachers from 1997 to 2000 before being elected first vice president of OECTA in 2001. She moved up to president in 2003 and then was elected to a second term in 2005.
Kennedy will be replaced by Elaine MacNeil, a high school teacher from Belleville. MacNeil takes over July 1.
