M is for media month in May

TORONTO - What is the role of faith in the media? Do media sustain or stunt faith? Where is faith-related material located online? These are a few of the questions Vanessa Nicholas and Sr. Therese Meunier, CSJ, have fielded over the past year.
The pair co-direct Faith Connections, a young adult ministry for ages 18-39 sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph. They’ve also hosted events such as Theology on Tap, a monthly talk and discussion on theological issues, at the Duke of York Pub.
“We think media is really relevant to young adults. It’s a more prominent form of communication with the Internet,” said Nicholas.
Nicholas and Meunier have scheduled talks and workshops throughout May to try and answer the influx of media-related questions. The first workshop begins May 2 at 7 p.m. with a tour of Salt + Light Television, 114 Richmond St. E., followed by “Lights, Camera... Hesitation: The Church and Media Relations Today,” presented by Hanna Gartner of CBC’s The Fifth Estate.
Sr. Hosea Rupprecht, FSP, will facilitate how to pray with the media May 7 at Pauline Books and Media, 3022 Dufferin St., from 7 to 9 p.m.
Ryerson University chaplain Kimberley Gottfried will show Babel 7 to 10 p.m. May 24 at the Ryerson Catholic Chaplaincy, 64 McGill St.
The Catholic Register will host a workshop and discussion on When the Media Mug My Faith: What Can I Do? May 29 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the archdiocese of Toronto’s pastoral centre, 1155 Yonge St.
