Busy mothers facing spiritual exhaustion

TORONTO - To Dorothy Pilarski, helping catechize mothers is almost an emergency today. This is one reason why the Toronto-based mother and pioneer of a mothers’ group organized a conference titled “Dynamic Women of Faith” this month.
“Mothers are getting busier and busier, more spiritually exhausted and spiritually depleted,” Pilarski said.
The March 6 event took aim at topics Pilarski said Catholic mothers need to give peace and meaning to their lives.

They were able to converge and discuss everything from how to be happy to parenting in a consumer culture.
The conference, she said, was the next reasonable step in her 12-year ministry to mothers.
After an illness that has prevented her from having more than her two children, Pilarski said she felt compelled to reach out and help mothers to see what a gift it is to be a mother.
“A lot of them pour their hearts and lives into the corporate world and then they miss their children’s childhood and then they mourn that,” Pilarski said.
Pilarski, who specializes in public relations and marketing, spearheaded a mothers’ group 12 years ago that met monthly for an hour in her kitchen.
Each time they brought in a new speaker, who discussed a topic mothers could relate to, either in spiritual or practical matters of motherhood, with a Catholic focus of course.
Two years ago, Salt + Light Television broadcast a series called Mothering Full of Grace . Pilarski appears in all 13 episodes.
After appearing as a guest on one of the episodes last year, Toronto resident Cris Smith said Pilarski invited her to speak at the mother’s group about the death of her infant daughter.
“The moms all came from different levels in their spirituality and I have no doubt that each one of us was encouraged by something that was shared,” Smith said.
This is one thing Pilarski wants to extend to mothers everywhere.
