Calgary Anglicans join flock

CALGARY - An Anglo-Catholic Church in Calgary was the first in Canada to be designated a Roman Catholic Anglican-use congregation.

A special, unprecedented service was held Dec. 18 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Calgary to welcome St. John the Evangelist parish. It will soon be received into the Roman Catholic Church.

Many parishioners from St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church decided a year ago that their spiritual journey was leading them to enter into the Roman Catholic Church.

“We had a corporate body of parishioners from St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church accepting the Pope’s invitation in accordance with Anglicanorum Coetibus,” said Calgary Bishop Fred Henry

Given their small numbers, it has also been recommended they join eventually with the Anglican ordinariate in the United States, which was established Jan. 1.
