A silver for excellence for The Catholic Register

The Catholic Register was recognized as the second best national Catholic newspaper in North America at the Catholic Media Conference awards ceremony June 22 in Indianapolis.
The awards handed out in the category of general excellence for national newspapers are the final presentations of a two-hour gala and are considered the most prestigious honours of the evening.
“Given the stiff competition from several large American publications, this is a tremendous achievement for The Register,” said publisher and editor Jim O’Leary. “It’s recognition of the hard work and talent of everyone who has a hand in producing our paper each week.”
The annual awards are presented by the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada. The judges, from Marquette University in Milwaukee and Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, were struck by The Register’s comprehensive coverage.
“Every page of this paper is a fresh adventure into the complexity of Church news, history, theological reflection, culture and opinions,” said the judges.
“A staff of talented writers bring a global perspective to the pages (and) strong photos provide special emphasis.”
First place was awarded to the National Catholic Reporter of Kansas City. Third place went to Our Sunday Visitor of Huntington, Indiana.
The Register also took second place in the category of best seasonal issue for its 2011 Christmas edition, and third place in the category of online multi-media presentations.
