Attempted murder charges laid in attack on Dominicans' home

Toronto - A 53-year-old man faces attempted arson and attempted murder charges

after allegedly trying to blow up the home of Dominican Friars in downtown Toronto.

While occupants slept early on the morning of Dec. 10, police allege the man entered the College and Huron Streets area residence and "dispensed propane gas" while four people slept.

According to a police report, the man returned to the home later, breaking in, and was discovered by the occupants. The man fled the scene, but was later apprehended in the area by police.

The friars declined to speak to The Catholic Register due to the ongoing police investigation, but Fr. Marcos Ramos had earlier told the CBC that the intruder knew one of the men who lives in the home.

"The person knew somebody in our community years ago, used to work with this person on some project before," Ramos said.
"We're still in shock about it," he said. "I was sound asleep, I thank God that at least it didn't happen, because I probably would have gone to eternity in my sleep."

Chanh-Sang Lay of Vaughan, Ont., faces 15 criminal counts.
