Colourful entries highlight Register Christmas contest

The peace and joy of Christmas emanates from the remarkable narrative of a birth in a Bethlehem manger more than 2,000 years ago. Children have always been enchanted by the birthday of the Baby Jesus, which is probably why The Register's annual Christmas drawing contest has become so popular.

Once again we received piles of entries from Canadian school children, plus online entries this year from the Philippines and California. The winners in each of the three categories will receive a $100 gift certificate from the contest sponsor, DiCarlo Religious Supply Centre, Inc. The judging was conducted by The Register's art director and editors, and the winners are . . .

Ayalina Jonathan, 12, won top prize in the Grade 7-8 category with a Nativity depiction that was colourful and noteworthy for its detail.

Kate MacDonell, 11, entered a drawing that took a more simple approach that impressed the judges with its peacefulness to earn top prize in the Grade 4-6 category.

Selen Hasif, eight, submitted a pencil sketch that was technically impressive and depicted a joyful scene that charmed the judges to win the Grade 1-3 category.

According to the contest rules, the drawings had to depict some aspect of the Nativity of Jesus, which meant no Santas, reindeer or Christmas trees.

We are happy to print all the winning entries on these pages, accompanied by some of the others that caught our eye.
