When asked by a deacon how best to communicate the Christian faith, St. Augustine encouraged him to share the story of salvation, especially drawing from the Bible. Scripture can be summarized as stories of God’s dealings with men and women and the unfolding of His love in their lives in order to bring them salvation.
The Christian journey begins when we see our lives as springing from the unfolding story of God’s love. Christian faith is always the meeting of two freedoms: God’s free act of love in generating, saving and sanctifying created human beings, and our free response in faith, hope and love to the summons to embrace God’s love. The dynamic correspondence of these two wills brings fulfilment, fruitfulness and peace. Christian faith, therefore, emerges as the insertion of our own story into the story of God...
