Canadian priest murdered in Haiti

A Marian order priest on the cusp of returning to Canada within a week was shot and killed in Haiti's capital April 25.

Fr. Richard Joyal, 62, was shot three times in the back after withdrawing money from a Port-au-Prince bank. Two men on a motorcycle approached Fr. Joyal as he exited the bank, grabbing the bag he was carrying and then shooting him.

Fr. Joyal had been in Haiti helping to relocate students so they could continue their studies after the 2010 earthquake. He was to return to Quebec City May 3. The Marian order is in the process of closing its mission in Haiti that first opened in the early 2000s.

Police later found Fr. Joyal's wallet with the money in it and confiscated it.

"It's terrible news, it's dreadful," Fr. Marc Turcotte, a fellow Marian priest, told the Canadian Press.

Police are continuing to investigate the murder.
