The United States sticks to its guns

Earlier this year the topic of gun control was brought up in this space, citing how that issue underlines perhaps the biggest cultural difference between Canadians and our neighbours to the south.

The column was written shortly after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut when 20 children and six adults were senselessly gunned down.

Since then lots of things have happened, including the latest failed attempt in Washington for any sort of increased gun control laws. Those supporting tighter controls vow to keep the issue from fading, as it has in the past. Those against increased background checks of gun buyers and other controls fall back onto their old chestnuts of calling it “flawed legislation” and an attack on the U.S. Constitution with its right to bear arms from muskets to assault weapons.
