To read the coverage and study the ghastly pictures from the Quebec village of Lac Mégantic is to know that hearts must be asking where was God during this tragedy.

As the missing are confirmed dead, and the deaths shatter more families, more friendships, more hearts, it is a certainty of human nature that some will want to shake their fists at the sky and ask how a loving God could let His people perish so horribly.

Indeed, some accounts of the Saturday morning explosion and fire in the heart of the pastoral village of 6,000 in Quebec’s Eastern Townships already have a decidedly Old Testament ring to them. They describe people scrambling from the path of the fireball ignited by oil-laden railway tanker cars and looking back to see others trapped and consumed by the flames...
