Children’s contest proclaims Easter joy

One of the blessings of Easter we enjoy at The Catholic Register is reviewing the sketches and paintings from elementary school children who enter our annual Easter drawing contest.

This year was no exception as we received submissions by the dozens from children from Grades 1 to 8. The only downside is that selecting a winner from among a mountain of artwork is no easy task.

But after deliberation the judges identified three winners and selected several runners-up, whose colour art we are proud to showcase on these two pages.

The top entry in each of three categories will receive a $50 day at the movies courtesy of The Register.

In the Grades 1-3 category, Ellen Jaworski of Toronto took first place. The eight-year old Grade 2 student impressed the judges with a drawing of a joyful, loving Jesus rising on the first Easter morning.

In the Grades 4-6 category, the winner is Kandace Pedrara of North York, Ont. A 10-year-old fifth-grader, she captured a peaceful, smiling Jesus rising from the tomb to appear before the two Marys in a way that beautifully depicts Easter happiness.

In the Grades 7-8 category, top prize goes to Grade 7 student Justina Celesta Hogan. She won over the judges with a dramatic rendering of the Resurrection that was notable for its creative use of colour and attention to detail.
