The question of divorce

In late August, shortly after my wife and I celebrated our anniversary, the secretary-general of the Italian Bishops Conference, signalled a possible massive change in Church teaching on marriage. 

According to a report from Religion News Service, Bishop Nunzio Galantino publicly called for the Church to end “de facto discrimination” against “unconventional couples” – i.e. those who have divorced and remarried — by making them feel at home in the Church and perhaps even admitting them to participation in the Eucharist. 

“Couples in irregular matrimonial situations are also Christians, but they are sometimes looked upon with prejudice,” Galantino was quoted. “The burden of exclusion from the sacraments is an unjustified price to pay, in addition to de facto discrimination.”
