A sad day for Catholic views in the news

I don’t suppose I will ever forget Friday the 13th of 2015. That was the day Sun News, where I hosted a nightly television show for almost four years, closed its doors. Quite a lot has been written in the past couple of weeks about all this but from a Catholic standpoint the end of the network was a particular loss. Two of the four prime time shows were hosted by Catholics — myself and Brian Lilley — and the station as a whole gave an informed and sympathetic hearing to Catholic news and subjects that is not replicated anywhere else on television and is not likely to be.

On my show, The Arena, we interviewed numerous priests, cardinals, archbishops, Catholic activists and those speaking for the pro-life community, persecuted Christians and myriad Catholic causes. Whether it was Cardinal Thomas Collins, Fr. Stefano Penna, George Weigel, John Allen, Steve Ray, Tom Peterson of Catholics Come Home, Austen Ivereigh of Catholic Voices, Christian Elia of the Catholic Civil Rights League or any of the other dozens of guests, they were given time and respect.

Alas, none of that will take place any longer.
