What makes it possible is doing it together. Since Ash Wednesday, a colleague and I have been fasting — taking only one meal of soup and bread a day.

Ryan Worms and I work for Development and Peace. We text each other messages of encouragement and pictures of our favourite soups. We compare our shrinking waistlines. We are disciples together.

This 46-day Lenten spiritual journey was chosen because of our love for the organization and our belief in its mission. The fast is a public one because we want others to know, to love and to support that mission as well.

To know why we love and believe, you would need to see what we have seen.

In eight plus years at Development and Peace, I have accompanied visitors from Honduras, Senegal, Gaza, East Timor, Brazil and Syria. They come so that Canadian Catholics can hear firsthand how their generosity is helping to build the global common good.
