Gendron elected president of Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops

Bishop Lionel Gendron of Saint-Jean-Longueuil has been elected president of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), succeeding Bishop Douglas Crosby of Hamilton.

Archbishop Richard Gagnon of Winnipeg was elected vice president. The announcement came Sept. 27 during the third day of the plenary assembly of the CCCB at Cornwall, Ont.

Gendron, 73, who will serve a two-year term, is a native Saint-Quentin, N.B., and was ordained in 1969. He joined the Sulpicians and was elected Superior of their Canadian province in 1994. He was named Auxiliary Bishop of Montreal in 2006 before becoming Bishop of Saint-Jean-Longueuil in 2010. He has been vice president of the CCCB since 2015.

Gagnon, 69, has been Archbishop of Winnipeg since 2013.

The CCCB’s new executive committee also includes two co-treasurers: Bishop William McGrattan of Calgary and Archbishop Luc Cyr of Sherbrooke, Que.
